Thanksgiving in Hawaii: Airfare, Holiday Buffets, and What Stays Open

Thanksgiving in Hawaii falls on Thursday, November 26, in 2026, and the timing is awkward. The quiet shoulder weeks of early November are ending, the north shore surf season is building, and the Christmas peak is still about three weeks away. For mainland households planning a holiday trip, or a scouting visit before a move, that timing affects nearly every cost.

Airfare spikes on the Wednesday before and the Sunday after, while seats on the holiday itself often cost less. Resort buffets in Waikiki and on Maui commonly run $95 to $175 per adult. Costco, Walmart and Target close for the day. Most supermarkets, beaches and the national parks on Maui and Hawaii Island stay open.

This article covers the fare pattern, late-November weather and surf, what is open on each island, dining prices, rental-car demand and packing. Figures come from public agency data, airline and retailer policies, and price ranges reported in recent holiday seasons. Holiday hours change from year to year, so confirm details the week before travel.

Thanksgiving week 2026 at a glance

Daylight saving time ends on the mainland on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Hawaii does not observe it, so during Thanksgiving week the islands are 2 hours behind Pacific time, 4 hours behind Central and 5 hours behind Eastern. The first NFL kickoff, at 12:30 p.m. Eastern, airs at 7:30 a.m. in Honolulu.

The table below shows typical fare pressure for each day of the travel window and what changes on the islands. Fare figures are compared with the average for the same route across the two surrounding weeks.

Day Date Typical fare vs. two-week average What to expect on the islands
Saturday Nov 21 +10% to +20% Early holiday arrivals; resort occupancy climbs
Tuesday Nov 24 +15% to +25% Last calm day for Costco and supermarket runs
Wednesday Nov 25 +25% to +45% Airports, grocery lines and highways at their busiest
Thursday Nov 26 -15% to -30% Big-box stores closed; buffets seat roughly 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday Nov 27 -5% to +10% Black Friday openings as early as 6 a.m.
Saturday Nov 28 +10% to +20% Interisland flights crowded with returning residents
Sunday Nov 29 +30% to +50% Eastbound red-eyes and rental-car returns peak
Monday Nov 30 +10% to +25% Return crowds thin out by midday

The Thanksgiving airfare pattern

Holiday fares to Hawaii follow the same basic pattern as other domestic Thanksgiving travel. The difference is that almost every visitor arrives and leaves by plane. Airlines price the week around two peak days, and travelers who move either one by a single day can often save more than $150 per ticket.

Why the Wednesday before costs the most

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving draws travelers who work through Tuesday and want four or five days on the islands. Morning and midday departures from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle sell out first, and the cheaper fare classes on those flights close weeks ahead. Tuesday departures typically cost 10% to 20% less, and Monday departures less again.

Westbound flights usually land in the afternoon. A 3 p.m. Wednesday arrival puts travelers at the rental counter during the islands’ own pre-holiday rush, when grocery stores, gas stations and the roads around Honolulu and Kahului are at their busiest.

The Sunday-after return crush

Sunday, November 29, is usually the most expensive day of the window. Most eastbound flights from Honolulu, Kahului, Kona and Lihue leave in the afternoon or as overnight red-eyes. They land on the West Coast around 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. and in the Midwest by late Monday morning.

Those red-eyes carry vacationers and holiday visitors at the same time, so they fly close to full. Moving the return to Saturday or to Tuesday, December 1, commonly cuts the fare by $100 to $250 per person from the West Coast, and by more from the Midwest. Monday returns fall in between.

Flying on Thanksgiving Day itself

Thanksgiving Day is reliably the cheapest day of the week to fly west, because most travelers want to be at their destination for the meal. Fares from West Coast hubs are often 15% to 30% below Wednesday levels. Flights carry fewer passengers, so bag claim and rental pickup also go faster.

A morning flight from California lands in Honolulu around midday, which leaves time for a late buffet seating. The risk is that a flight delay can mean missing the reservation. Booking a seating at 4 p.m. or later leaves a buffer.

Interisland flights during the holiday

Flights between Honolulu, Kahului, Kona, Hilo and Lihue take 35 to 50 minutes, but residents visiting family fill them during Thanksgiving week. One-way fares of $59 to $99 in quiet weeks can reach $129 to $179 on Wednesday and Sunday. Travelers visiting a second island should book that flight when they book the mainland one.

Travel pattern 2026 dates Round trip from LAX or SFO Round trip from Chicago or Minneapolis
Wednesday out, Sunday back Nov 25 to Nov 29 $650 to $900 $1,050 to $1,500
Saturday out, Saturday back Nov 21 to Nov 28 $500 to $725 $850 to $1,200
Sunday out, Wednesday back Nov 22 to Dec 2 $450 to $650 $800 to $1,100
Thursday out, Tuesday back Nov 26 to Dec 1 $400 to $600 $750 to $1,050

These ranges reflect main-cabin fares to Honolulu reported in recent holiday seasons. Fares to Kahului, Kona and Lihue usually run $50 to $150 higher, because fewer seats serve those airports.

How far ahead to book from West Coast and Midwest hubs

The best time to book depends heavily on where the trip starts. West Coast routes have many nonstop flights and several competing airlines, so fares stay flexible longer. Midwest routes rely on a few daily nonstops plus connections through the West Coast, and the cheapest seats disappear months earlier.

From the West Coast, the best prices have historically appeared 6 to 10 weeks before departure. For a November 25 trip, that means booking between mid-September and mid-October. Fares rarely fall after early November, when the last discounted seats on holiday-week flights tend to sell out.

Travelers from the Midwest and Mountain states need to book earlier. A 12- to 16-week window, roughly August through early September, has produced the best holiday fares from Chicago and Minneapolis. Denver and Dallas fall in between, at about 10 to 14 weeks. Travelers who miss those windows usually save more by flying on Thanksgiving Day than by waiting for a price drop.

Hub Nonstop time to Honolulu Best booking window Wednesday to Sunday round trip Thursday to Tuesday round trip
Los Angeles (LAX) 5 h 45 min 6 to 10 weeks $650 to $900 $400 to $600
San Francisco (SFO) 5 h 35 min 6 to 10 weeks $650 to $900 $400 to $600
Seattle (SEA) 6 h 10 min 8 to 10 weeks $700 to $950 $450 to $650
Phoenix (PHX) 6 h 35 min 8 to 12 weeks $750 to $1,000 $500 to $700
Denver (DEN) 7 h 30 min 10 to 14 weeks $850 to $1,200 $600 to $850
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) 8 h 15 min 10 to 14 weeks $900 to $1,300 $650 to $950
Chicago (ORD) 9 h 05 min 12 to 16 weeks $1,050 to $1,500 $750 to $1,050
Minneapolis (MSP) 8 h 45 min 12 to 16 weeks $1,050 to $1,450 $750 to $1,050

Midwest travelers connecting through the West Coast should expect 10 to 13 hours of total travel time. A connection under 90 minutes on Wednesday or Sunday is risky. One weather delay in Chicago or Denver can leave passengers stuck, with every later flight on the route already sold out.

Late-November weather, surf and ocean conditions

Late November is the start of Hawaii’s wet season, which runs roughly October through April. Trade winds become less steady, cold fronts sometimes move down the island chain, and the windward coasts get noticeably wetter. For a month-by-month comparison, see the site’s guide to the best time to visit each Hawaiian island.

The winter swell reaches north shores

Storms in the North Pacific start sending swell toward Hawaii in October. By late November, north-facing coasts regularly see waves with 10- to 20-foot faces, and sometimes bigger. Oahu’s Waimea Bay, Pipeline and Sunset Beach, Kauai’s Hanalei Bay and Maui’s Honolua Bay can go from calm summer conditions to closed beaches within a day.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing typically runs on Oahu’s North Shore from mid-November into December. It brings crowds and traffic to Kamehameha Highway around Haleiwa, and parking can fill by 8 a.m. on contest days. National Weather Service high surf warnings often close north shore beaches to swimming entirely.

South- and west-facing shores are much calmer. Waikiki, Kihei and Wailea on Maui, Poipu on Kauai and the Kona coast generally see 1- to 3-foot surf through late November. That makes them the default places to swim and snorkel during the holiday week.

Rain on Kauai and in Hilo

Hilo averages roughly 15 inches of rain in November, one of the highest monthly totals of any U.S. city. Showers there tend to come overnight and in the late afternoon, and mornings are often clearer. Travelers choosing between Hilo and the drier Kona side can compare the two in the guide to Kona, Kohala Coast or Hilo.

On Kauai, Lihue averages about 4.5 inches in November, while Princeville and Hanalei on the north shore often get 8 inches or more. Flash flooding can close the highway near Hanalei with little warning. The site’s guide to a November Kauai trip breaks down rainfall by area and pre-holiday lodging rates.

Air and water temperatures

Coastal highs in late November run about 79°F to 82°F, with overnight lows of 66°F to 70°F. The ocean stays near 77°F to 79°F, only a few degrees below its late-summer peak. The sun sets in Honolulu around 5:50 p.m., leaving about 11 hours of daylight, so beach afternoons end earlier than many visitors expect.

Higher up, it is much colder. Before dawn at the 10,023-foot summit of Haleakala, temperatures commonly sit between 35°F and 45°F, and wind chill can push them below freezing. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, at about 4,000 feet, often drops into the 50s at night.

Location Avg. November rainfall Typical high / low Ocean temperature Typical late-November surf
Honolulu (Oahu, south shore) 2.3 in 81°F / 70°F 78°F 1 to 3 ft
Haleiwa (Oahu, north shore) 4.0 in 80°F / 68°F 77°F 8 to 20 ft faces
Kihei (Maui, south shore) 1.5 in 83°F / 68°F 78°F 1 to 3 ft
Kailua-Kona (Hawaii Island) 2.0 in 82°F / 71°F 79°F 1 to 3 ft
Hilo (Hawaii Island) 15.0 in 80°F / 66°F 77°F 3 to 6 ft
Lihue (Kauai) 4.5 in 79°F / 68°F 77°F 2 to 5 ft
Princeville (Kauai, north shore) 8.5 in 78°F / 67°F 76°F 8 to 20 ft faces

These are approximate long-term averages. Any given week can be much wetter or drier.

What is open on Thanksgiving Day: groceries, Costco and big-box stores

A common planning mistake for Thanksgiving in Hawaii is assuming the warehouse stores will be open. All seven Costco warehouses in the state, four on Oahu and one each on Maui, Hawaii Island and Kauai, close on Thanksgiving Day under the chain’s national policy. Their gas stations close too. Walmart and Target have also closed their stores on the holiday every year since 2020.

The day before Thanksgiving is one of the hardest days of the year to shop at a Hawaii Costco. Lines for turkeys, poke platters and pies form before opening, and the parking lots at the Iwilei and Kahului warehouses can fill within 30 minutes. Visitors stocking a vacation rental do better shopping on Monday or Tuesday morning.

Local supermarket chains generally stay open on Thanksgiving, usually with shorter hours. Foodland, Safeway and Times on Oahu, KTA Super Stores on Hawaii Island and Big Save on Kauai have historically opened in the morning and closed in the afternoon or early evening. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser usually publishes a list of holiday hours in the days before.

Store type Thanksgiving Day status Typical hours that day Black Friday pattern
Costco (7 Hawaii warehouses) Closed, gas included Closed all 24 hours Regular hours; shop by Nov 24
Walmart Closed Closed all 24 hours Opens around 6 a.m.
Target Closed Closed all 24 hours Opens around 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.
Supermarkets (Foodland, Safeway, Times, KTA) Open at most locations Often 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.–6 p.m. Regular hours
Drugstores (Longs/CVS) Most open Store often 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; pharmacy reduced Regular hours
Convenience (ABC Stores, 7-Eleven) Open Many 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; some 24 hours Regular hours
Shopping malls Most stores closed Some restaurants open, roughly 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Doors as early as 7 a.m.

These patterns come from recent years. Individual stores set their own hours.

Prices can also be a surprise. Outside of store promotions, frozen turkeys in Honolulu have often sold for $1.99 to $2.99 a pound. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Honolulu consumer price index tracks the broader cost gap. The site’s comparison of Hawaii grocery prices by island shows Kauai and Maui running higher than Oahu.

Several chains offer a free or discounted turkey to shoppers who spend a set amount, commonly $150 to $300 over a few weeks. For a short visit, a supermarket’s prepared holiday dinner is usually simpler.

Hotel buffets and restaurant prix-fixe dinners

Most full-service resorts on the four main islands hold a Thanksgiving buffet or brunch. Many independent restaurants replace their regular menu with a fixed three- or four-course dinner. Prices rise for oceanfront locations and vary by island, with Maui’s Wailea and Kaanapali resorts usually at the top.

Dining format Where Adult price Child price Book by
Oceanfront resort buffet Waikiki $95 to $150 $45 to $75 Late October
Resort buffet Wailea, Kaanapali $120 to $175 $55 to $85 Late October
Resort buffet Kohala Coast $110 to $165 $50 to $80 Early November
Resort buffet Poipu, Princeville $100 to $160 $50 to $80 Early November
Prix-fixe dinner Independent restaurants $65 to $120 $30 to $50 2 to 3 weeks ahead
Takeout holiday meal Supermarket delis $90 to $160 per 6 to 8 people Included About Nov 20
Turkey plate lunch Diners, drive-ins $15 to $24 $10 to $14 Walk-in

The advertised price is rarely the final bill. Hawaii’s general excise tax adds about 4.5% to 4.7%, depending on the county. Many resorts also add an automatic 18% to 22% service charge, especially for groups of six or more. Once both are added, a $135 buffet often comes to about $170 per adult, before drinks.

Reservation timing

Resort buffets typically open reservations in September or October. The most popular seatings, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., often fill two to three weeks before the holiday. Waikiki has the most seats, so it is the best place to find a last-minute table. On Kauai and the Kohala Coast, if the resort buffet is sold out, there may be few other options within a 20-minute drive.

Lower-cost alternatives

  • Turkey plate lunches at drive-ins and diners, usually $15 to $24, often with rice and stuffing.
  • Supermarket holiday dinners for 6 to 8 people, typically $90 to $160, ordered by about November 20.
  • Smoked turkey or kalua pig from local caterers, often picked up on Wednesday.
  • Cooking at a vacation rental, with groceries bought by Tuesday to avoid Costco crowds.

Island-by-island: what stays open on the day

How much stays open depends on the island’s size. Oahu has roughly 1 million residents and most of the state’s hotel rooms, so on the holiday it works much like a mainland city. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Hawaii QuickFacts puts the state’s population near 1.44 million. The other islands have fewer options, and a closed restaurant can mean a 30-minute drive to the next one.

Households using the holiday as a scouting trip before a move can compare neighborhoods with the site’s guide to average rent in Hawaii by island. Thanksgiving week also shows real traffic, grocery lines and restaurant availability at their busiest.

Oahu

Waikiki stays busy on Thanksgiving. Hotel restaurants, ABC Stores and most beachfront bars keep normal or close to normal hours. At Ala Moana Center, retail stores typically close for the day while some restaurants stay open, and the mall opens early on Black Friday. TheBus generally runs a Sunday and holiday schedule, posted on honolulu.gov.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial closes on Thanksgiving. It is one of only three days a year it closes, along with Christmas and New Year’s Day. Diamond Head State Monument and Hanauma Bay have been open on holiday Thursdays in recent years. Both require advance reservations for nonresidents, and both should be checked the week before.

Maui

Maui’s resort areas in Kaanapali, Kapalua, Wailea and Kihei operate normally, and their buffets are the most expensive in the state. Lahaina town is still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire. Before planning a day in West Maui, check the latest access rules in the guide to visiting Maui after the Lahaina fire.

Haleakala National Park stays open on the holiday. Watching the sunrise requires a reservation. Reservations are released 60 days ahead at 7 a.m. Hawaii time, so Thanksgiving morning slots go on sale in late September, and a smaller batch is released 2 days before. The Kahului Costco is closed, and the Maui Bus may run a reduced schedule or not at all.

Hawaii Island

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The $30 vehicle pass is good for 7 days. From Kailua-Kona the drive is about 96 miles, or 2.5 hours each way; from Hilo it is about 30 miles and 45 minutes. The Volcanoes National Park day trip guide compares the two starting points.

The Kona Costco is closed, but KTA Super Stores in Kona, Waimea and Hilo have typically opened with shorter hours. Most of the island’s holiday buffets are at the Kohala Coast resorts. Bus schedules and county park updates are on hawaiicounty.gov. For rainfall and vog by month, see the guide to choosing a week on Hawaii Island.

Kauai

Kauai is the quietest of the four islands on the holiday. Poipu and Princeville resorts hold buffets, but the Lihue Costco closes and many independent restaurants in Hanapepe, Waimea and Kapaa close for the day. Visitors in vacation rentals should plan to cook or book a table early.

Waimea Canyon State Park is open during daylight hours, but afternoon clouds often hide the canyon after about 1 p.m. On the north shore, Haena State Park requires advance entry and parking reservations, and winter surf can make its beaches unsafe for swimming.

Parks, attractions and public services on Thanksgiving

National parks, state parks and beaches mostly keep normal schedules, while museums and federal visitor sites are more likely to close. State and county government offices, including driver licensing, close on Thursday. Hawaii does not make the Friday after Thanksgiving a state holiday, so most offices reopen on November 27.

Attraction Island Thanksgiving status Nonresident cost or reservation
Pearl Harbor National Memorial Oahu Closed (also Dec 25 and Jan 1) Free entry; USS Arizona reservation $1
Diamond Head State Monument Oahu Usually open, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. $5 per person plus $10 parking
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Oahu Normally open Thursdays; confirm $25 per person; closed Mon and Tue
Bishop Museum Oahu Typically closed Adult admission about $35
Haleakala National Park Maui Open $30 per vehicle; $1 sunrise reservation
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Hawaii Island Open 24 hours $30 per vehicle, valid 7 days
Waimea Canyon State Park Kauai Open during daylight $5 per person plus $10 parking
Haena State Park Kauai Open with reservation $5 entry plus $10 parking, booked ahead

Holiday events pick up right after Thanksgiving. The state tourism site, GoHawaii, lists craft fairs and lighting ceremonies on each island. Honolulu City Lights traditionally opens on the first Saturday of December, which is December 5 in 2026.

Rental cars during Thanksgiving week

Rental car demand peaks at the same time as airfare. Rental fleets on Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island are limited to cars shipped from the mainland by carriers such as Matson and Pasha Hawaii. That means agencies cannot quickly add cars when holiday bookings jump, and cars often sell out at Kahului and Lihue in the final week.

Compact cars that rent for $55 to $90 a day in early November often reach $80 to $150 a day during the holiday week, before taxes and fees. The site’s guide to Hawaii rental car prices shows how rates change by island, season and airport.

Island (airport) Early November compact, per day Thanksgiving week compact, per day Thanksgiving week SUV or Jeep, per day Book this far ahead
Oahu (HNL) $50 to $75 $75 to $115 $110 to $170 6 to 8 weeks
Maui (OGG) $60 to $90 $95 to $150 $140 to $220 10 to 12 weeks
Hawaii Island (KOA, ITO) $55 to $85 $85 to $135 $130 to $200 8 to 10 weeks
Kauai (LIH) $60 to $90 $95 to $145 $135 to $210 10 to 12 weeks

Booking strategy

  • Book a rate with free cancellation as soon as flights are booked.
  • Check prices weekly; holiday rates sometimes drop 3 to 5 weeks before arrival.
  • Compare off-airport and peer-to-peer rentals, which can cost $20 to $40 a day less.
  • Skip the car for a Waikiki-only stay; hotel parking often costs $45 to $65 a night.
  • Allow an extra 30 to 45 minutes for Sunday returns at Kahului and Honolulu.

Gas adds to the cost. Hawaii pump prices typically run well above the national and West Coast averages that the Energy Information Administration tracks weekly, often by more than $1 a gallon. The Hawaii Department of Transportation posts airport and road condition updates.

What to pack for late November

A Thanksgiving trip to Hawaii can include beach days, a dressier holiday meal, rain on the windward coasts and near-freezing mountaintops. Travelers headed to Kauai can use the site’s Kauai rainy-season packing checklist for a more detailed list.

  • A packable rain jacket for Hilo, Hanalei and windward Oahu.
  • A fleece and warm hat for Haleakala sunrise, where it can drop to 35°F.
  • Reef-safe mineral sunscreen; Hawaii bans the sale of oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens.
  • An aloha shirt or sundress; most resort buffets expect resort casual, not swimwear.
  • Water shoes and a rash guard for long snorkels in water near 78°F.
  • A collapsible cooler bag for grocery runs and beach picnics.

Be careful with food brought from the mainland. Commercially packaged items are generally allowed, but fresh fruit and plants are restricted, and arriving passengers must fill out the state agricultural declaration. Pets face stricter rules: dogs and cats must meet the Department of Agriculture’s animal quarantine requirements, which take months of preparation for direct release.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thanksgiving a good time to visit Hawaii?

For many households, yes. The weather is warm, with highs near 80°F and ocean temperatures around 78°F, and south-facing beaches stay calm. The downsides are peak airfare on Wednesday and Sunday, higher rental car rates and rain on the windward coasts. Flying on Thanksgiving Day and returning on Tuesday avoids the highest prices.

Is Costco open on Thanksgiving in Hawaii?

No. All seven Costco warehouses in Hawaii, on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island and Kauai, close on Thanksgiving Day, and so do their gas stations. They reopen with regular hours on Black Friday. Plan to shop by Tuesday, November 24, because Wednesday lines and parking are among the worst of the year.

How much does a Thanksgiving buffet cost in Hawaii?

Resort buffets generally cost $95 to $175 per adult, with Maui’s Wailea and Kaanapali resorts at the top of the range. Children’s prices typically fall between $45 and $85. With general excise tax and an 18% to 22% service charge added, a $135 buffet often comes to about $170 per adult before drinks.

When should Thanksgiving flights to Hawaii be booked?

From West Coast hubs such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, the best fares have historically appeared 6 to 10 weeks ahead. From Chicago, Minneapolis and other Midwest cities, 12 to 16 weeks ahead works better. Travelers booking late usually save more by flying on Thanksgiving Day than by waiting for prices to fall.

Are Hawaii’s national parks open on Thanksgiving?

Yes. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is open 24 hours, and Haleakala National Park operates normally, though watching the sunrise at Haleakala requires a reservation released 60 days ahead. Both charge $30 per vehicle. The main exception is Pearl Harbor National Memorial on Oahu, which closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Is the surf dangerous in Hawaii in late November?

On north-facing shores, it often is. Winter swells regularly bring waves with 10- to 20-foot faces to places such as Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and Hanalei Bay, and high surf warnings close beaches to swimming. South and west shores, including Waikiki, Kihei, Poipu and Kona, usually stay at 1 to 3 feet.

How far ahead should a rental car be booked for Thanksgiving week?

Book earliest for Maui and Kauai, about 10 to 12 weeks ahead, because their fleets are small and cars often sell out. For Hawaii Island, book 8 to 10 weeks ahead, and for Oahu, 6 to 8 weeks. A reservation with free cancellation lets travelers rebook if rates drop three to five weeks before arrival.
