If you’re planning to buy a home in Hawaii, or already own a home in Hawaii but are having trouble paying your mortgage, the Hawaii Homeownership Center can help. This federally funded nonprofit currently serves prospective and current homeowners on Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island (with plans to serve Maui in the future).
The center’s mission is to help individuals and families buy or build their own home in Hawaii. You don’t have to be a first-time homebuyer and there are no income requirements to use the center’s services, although some of its programs are aimed at first-time and low- to average-income homebuyers.
If you’re already a homeowner but are having problems paying your mortgage, the center offers free foreclosure prevention counseling so you can learn what your options are and avoid loan modification scams.
If you’re a prospective homebuyer, the center offers free one-hour orientation sessions (you can attend onsite or online) on its services and the benefits of owning a home. If you then decide to pay the center’s $60 lifetime membership fee, you’ll gain access to all of its services that will guide you through the process of buying a home, including:
- Homebuyer education classes (available online and onsite)
- Private counseling sessions
- Mortgage financing through HHOC Mortgage (although you’re under no obligation to use this mortgage broker)
- Referrals to real estate agents, lenders, homeowners insurance companies, and other professional services
